Zomato’s core content features include menus, photos and geocoded coordinates for restaurants. Other community features include reviews, ratings and the ability to follow other users’ recommendations on Zomato. Apart from the website and apps, Zomato is also available in print in select cities in India and UAE, with versions for other cities on the way.

Growth Details & Expansion Plans: Zomato is looking to expand to 22 new countries over the next two years. The company will further expand its presence in Europe, the Americas and Asia over the next couple of years.

Investors & Amount raised: Zomato recently received a combined US$37 million from Sequoia Capital and Info Edge. This has taken Zomato’s total funding to over US$53 million (Rs 324 crore).


Zoom

What it offers: Zoom offers self-drive car hire by the hour or by the day.  It has vehicles scattered across Bangalore, with hyper-local operations and marketing.  Zoom’s members reserve the cars online or on their mobile app.

Growth Details & Expansion Plans: Zoom launched in February 2013 with 7 vehicles and currently has 50 vehicles on the road.  Zoom is expected to cross the 100 vehicle mark in February 2014 and continue to grow extremely quickly after that point.

Investors & Amount raised: Zoom has raised a US$1.6 million seed round, led by Empire Angels and FundersClub.  Other personal investors include Larry Summers, Lady Barbara Judge, professors from Wharton, Harvard Law School, and the Judge School of Business at Cambridge University.


Team Indus

What it offers/doing: While not your typical startup, Team Indus makes the list because of its audacious plans. Team Indus is India’s only entry for the Google Lunar XPRIZE, the global competition to land a robotic spacecraft on the Moon. The team features a former Air Force pilot, a management guru, a branding expert, a serial entrepreneur and an aerospace engineer. Team Indus is building capabilities to provide cost effective, rapid turnaround, full spectrum services for Aerospace applications to global customers. Investors & Amount raised: Recently the company raised its Series A capital from Kalaari Capital. Previously, it had raised $500,000 from Blume Ventures, US-based 500Startups, Rajan Anandan, Sunil Kalra, Shailesh Rao and other prominent global angel investors. Attach it to you luggage and it will sound an alarm when moved. Tag a pillbox and it will alert you if it is not opened at the specified time. Put it on the leash of your dog and Gecko will set off an alarm when your pet moves away more than the distance you have set.

Apple Co-founder Steve Wozniak was among the many contributors to the Gecko crowdfunding campaign, personally endorsing it on his Twitter feed. Connovate Technology is an internet of things products and platform as a solution (PaaS), with Gecko Tag being the first product. Hubble Connected Ltd acquired a majority stake in the company in October this year.
